Wm. Harold Smith

June 19, 1928 ~ December 1, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old

DUNKIRK – Wm. Harold Smith, 89, rural Dunkirk resident died Friday December 1, 2017 at home following an extended illness.  Born in Delaware County on June 19, 1928, he was raised by his foster parents, Arthur & Maxine Campbell.  Harold graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1945 and received two Masters Degrees from Ball State University in both Chemistry and Math.  He was a school teacher for twenty-five years in the Jay School Corporation teaching at both Portland High School and Jay County High School before retiring in 1990.  He also farmed in Delaware County for several years.  Harold was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served just following the second World War and in later years participated in an honor flight.  He was a former director for Jay County REMC, was on the board of directors for Wabash Valley Power Association and Black Cemetery Association, and was also in the Dunkirk Alumni Association.  Harold was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Dunkirk and an instrumental participant in the growth of Union Chapel Ministries where he was a longtime member.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-six years, Peggy (Friend) Smith; two sons: Kent Smith, Dunkirk, and Kevin Smith (wife: Beth), North Webster; two daughters: Kimberly Sherman, Dunkirk, and Karen Rees (husband: Mark), Dunkirk; a brother: Paul Max Campbell (wife: June), Eaton; a sister: Margaret Prow (husband: Fred), DeSoto; 17 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by a son: Kane Smith; parents: Wilmer G. & Susie F. Smith; foster parents: Arthur & Maxine Campbell; 7 brothers: Herman Smith, Lewis Smith, Ralph Smith, Wilbur Smith, Earl Smith, Charles Smith, and Georgel Campbell; 3 sisters: Martha Shonk, Bessie Glass, and Mary Smith.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Union Chapel Ministries, Muncie.  Burial will follow at Black Cemetery with military rites provided by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m. at Union Chapel Ministries.
