Mr. Smith was my chemistry teacher at Portland High School. He took time to help me with chemistry. That was the same year my mom passed, so I had a lot going on and he was a good listener. Later on in years I moved down to the Dunkirk & Redkey area and meet up with the same wonderful teacher. His wife also taught my daughter, both of them wonderful teachers that I will never forget. Peggy & family you are in my thoughts & prayers.

wonderful memories of the whole Smith family from my youth at Plymouth Church in Dunkirk. Remember Harold leading music when our church visited the nursing homes. Also hayrides at your farm. You are all in my prayers and may God be forever near.

Best math teacher I ever had...helped a math-impaired girl through geometry. I'll never forget him.
Peace to his family.

Remember the Coffman family who often used to be at Mike's Landing in Michigan the same week as you? I'm jennifer, the youngest. We send our condolences to your family over the loss of both Harold and Kane (earlier). Both my parents are still living at age 89 also, but are in poor health. I just turned 60 and Jackie is 64. I remember Harold and Peggy both as being very kind people.

Mr. Smith was my geometry teacher at JCHS in the early 1980’s. I was not a very good math student and it stressed me out. He spent most every lunch hour tutoring me. We laughed, ate lunch, and made it through what was not an easy class for me. I will always remember his kindness and genuine care and concern for a young girl who just wanted to keep her grades up. My parents divorced that year and he took the time to listen and show genuine compassion and concern as I struggled. He cheered me up each day by smiling, cracking jokes, and investing time in a young girl who needed a little extra attention. When I think of teachers who made a difference in my life he will always be at the top of the list.
You have my deepest sympathy as you mourn his passing. I have no doubt he was met at the gates of heaven by Jesus and heard, “Well done my faithful servant.” Mr. Smith showed the love of Jesus to all he met.
