Wilma Lee (Maddy) Swingley, 95, passed away peacefully on Friday March 24, 2023 at Miller’s Merry Manor (now The Waters of Dunkirk) where she lived the past two years spreading her wit, wisdom, and joy with the loving and caring staff. Wilma was born on May 27, 1927 in Gallipolis, Ohio. She was a 1944 graduate of Redkey High School and retired from Indiana Bell Telephone Co. (now AT&T) after working there for 32 years. Affectionately known as “the purple lady”, Wilma belonged to B.P.W. (Business Professional Women), Red Hat Society, Liberty Bell Home Ec. Club, Fran’s Exercise Group, and Walker’s Walking Group. She was actively involved at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dunkirk and Muncie; between the two churches, she participated with Alter & Rosary Society, Women’s Association, and Bible study.
Wilma is survived by loving and caring friends, and several Swingley nieces & nephews.
Her husband of 54 years, C.G. “Gib” Swingley, died in 2000; also deceased are her parents: Albert Maddy and Hilda (Kinder) Harris, and special beloved pets.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 2023 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dunkirk, with Fr. Kevin Hurley officiating. In loving memory of Wilma, it is encouraged that those attending wear something purple. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Selma.
Memorials may be sent to St. Mary Catholic Church (Dunkirk) for Altar & Rosary Society, St. Mary Catholic Church (Muncie) for Women’s Society, or memorial masses at either church.
