Steve Sumwalt, age 74, Albany, died Friday April 5, 2024 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Born in Muncie on January 11, 1950, he grew up in Albany, graduated from Albany High School in 1968, and attended Purdue University – Indianapolis for engineering. Steve worked in construction and was a skilled cabinet maker. He was a member of Albany Christian Church and enjoyed reading, working on cars, gardening, and listening to music – especially blues. He made a “mean” salsa and was proud of his party mix.
Survivors include his brother: Dennie Sumwalt (wife: Jennette Huber), Farmland; girlfriend: Susan Hale, Anderson; nephew: Allen Sumwalt (wife: Lori Massie), Losantville; nieces: Alicia Corn, Selma, and Sarah Laskar (husband: Nick), Farmland; great-nieces: Willow Sumwalt (partner: Damon Hodson), Parker City, Rose Sumwalt, Winchester, and Evelynn Laskar, Farmland; great-nephews: Hunter Spain, Richmond, and Zac Coy, Muncie; great-great-niece: Lakelyn Hodson, Parker City; aunts: Rita Cannon, Albany, and Jackie Vandenplas, Muncie; several cousins, and friends including Cindy Besser, Albany.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Howard W. “Bill” & Margie (Hickle) Sumwalt.
A private graveside service will be held.
