H. Steven “Steve” Besser, age 74, Albany, died Sunday February 6, 2022 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Portland December 21, 1947, he grew up in Dunkirk and graduated from Dunkirk High School with the class of 1966. Steve lived in Albany for 47 years and was retired from Ardagh, Dunkirk, after working there 43 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, belonging to the Black Horse Regiment from 1968-1970. Steve was a member of American Legion Post 227, Dunkirk, and Local 96 (glass workers union). He enjoyed woodworking, wire sculpting, collecting coins/currency, and Bob Ross style painting. He could often be seen walking or riding his bike – on which he set a goal and accomplished riding 1,000 miles.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Cynthia “Cindy” Besser, and their sons: Wayne Besser (girlfriend: Lori), Portland, and Matt Besser, Albany; his brother: Tony Besser (wife: Kim), Dunkirk; 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.
His father, Bill Besser, died in 2018.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Meacham Funeral Service with military rites provided by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard. Cremation will follow.
Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be sent to Animal Rescue Fund (A.R.F.), Muncie, or Riley Children’s Foundation, Indianapolis.
