Phyllis A. Giddings Obituary

On Saturday, April 10th, 2021, Phyllis Ann (Keener) Giddings, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 89.  Phyllis was born on January 15, 1932 in Ridgeville to Hubert and Waveline (Shaneyfelt) Keener. She graduated from Mt. Summit High School in 1951 and Amber’s Beauty School, Muncie, in 1959.  Phyllis had a beauty shop business in Albany through the 60’s and later worked at Indiana Glass Co., Dunkirk, until she retired in 1999. After retiring, Phyllis worked summers at Yellowstone National Park for 4 years. She and her late husband Phillip were avid travelers, frequently visiting the American west.  Phyllis visited 45 of the 50 states as well as 3 Canadian provinces.  Phyllis had many hobbies including travelling, watching birds & wildlife, and painting.  She also loved music; she played the saxophone in high school and in dance bands during World War II.  Phyllis was known as an outgoing person; she served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Dunkirk and was a lifetime member of the College of Regents of the Moose.  She was also a past Noble Grand of the Daughters of Rebekah.  Phyllis made friends wherever she traveled and was known to all for her lively spirit.  Phyllis and Phillip eloped on May 29, 1951. They raised four daughters in Albany: Maralene, Yvonne, Anita and Patty.  Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband: Phillip L. Giddings; daughter: Patricia Ann Giddings; 3 brothers: James Arthur Keener, Max Lee Keener, Rex Neal Keener, and a sister: Virginia Lou Bolan.  

She is survived by her three daughters: Maralene Giddings, Dunkirk, Yvonne Giddings, Toledo, OH, and Anita Giddings (husband: Charles Wicker), Indianapolis; 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.  

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at Meacham Funeral Service.  Burial will follow at Strong Cemetery.

Visiting hours are Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to American Legion Post 227, Dunkirk, or Alzheimer’s Association.
