Peggy Jane Smith, age 91, died peacefully with family at her side on Saturday December 11, 2021 at Albany Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. Born January 19, 1930, she lived most of her life in Delaware County. A graduate of Dunkirk High School in 1948, she attended Indiana University, graduated from Indiana Business College in Muncie, and earned a Masters degree in Education from Ball State University. Peggy was employed by the Jay School Corporation and taught first grade at Westlawn Elementary School, Dunkirk, for over 30 years before retiring. She was also a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. In earlier years, Peggy enjoyed square dancing and was a member of a local Home Ec. Club and Order of The Eastern Star. She was a member of Plymouth Church, Dunkirk, and Union Chapel United Methodist Church, Muncie, and played piano & organ at both churches. She along with her husband were very involved in the growth of what is now known as Union Chapel Ministries. Peggy enjoyed living on her Delaware County farm and loved animals – especially Arabian horses; she was a longtime homemaker, enjoyed raising kids, and was always helpful to anyone in need.
Survivors include a son: Kevin Smith (wife: Beth), North Webster; 2 daughters: Kimberly Sherman, Dunkirk, and Karen Rees (husband: Mark), Dunkirk; sister: Janet Ashcraft (husband: Bob), Muncie; great-granddaughter: Lily Smith, Dunkirk; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years: Wm. Harold Smith; 2 sons: Kane Smith and Kent Smith; granddaughter: Janeen Smith; parents: Wilbur & Lenore (Holcroft) Friend; brother: Jerry Friend, 2 sisters: Judith Dhonau and BettyAnne Frazee.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Meacham Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Black Cemetery.
Visiting hours are Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be sent to Animal Rescue Fund (A.R.F.) in Muncie.
