Obituary

Martha “Martie” Butcher, age 74 of the rural Redkey/Albany area, died Sunday, February 27, 2022 at home following an illness.  Born in Indianapolis August 26, 1947, she graduated from Warren Central High School in 1965 and attended Indiana Central (now University of Indianapolis).  In 1978, she graduated from Kokomo School of Practical Nursing.  She lived in Redkey for a short time in the mid-1970s and after other moves came back to the rural Redkey/Albany area in 1994.  Martie was a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked at various nursing homes and hospitals around the state, working last as an L.P.N. at Tyson Foods in Portland.  She was a member of Delta Theta Tau, Fairview Knitting/Crocheting Club, Miniature Club, and Albany Lions Club.  As a pastor’s wife, she attended churches that Neil and she served in over the years, lastly at Bethel United Methodist Church in Anderson.  After retirement, they both attended Albany United Methodist Church.  Over the years, she sang in church choirs, taught Sunday school, and enjoyed working puzzles, crocheting, cross stitching, and crafts.  She also enjoyed traveling in her later years.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Rev. Neil D. Butcher; son: John Michael Butcher (wife: Kristy), Auburn; daughters: Kelly Jo Fretz (husband: Tim), North Salem, Catherine Marie Mahler (husband: Paul), Greenwood, and Marianne Kay Alwine (husband: Shannon), Auburn; sisters: Barbara Sue Zahn, Greenfield, and Grethel Faye Dowers (husband: Howard), Indianapolis; brothers-in-law: Steve Butcher (wife: Billie), Decatur, and Daniel Butcher (wife: Barbara), Decatur; sister-in-law: Gloria Butcher, Decatur; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Arthur G. & Francis M. (Kahle) DeFur; brother: Roland DeFur; grandson: Dylan Lee Alwine; brothers-in-law: Robert Eugene Butcher, David Richard Butcher, and Phillip Stanley Butcher.

A memorial service will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Albany United Methodist Church.  Cremation was chosen; burial will take place at a later date at Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, IN.

The family will receive visitors from 3-4 p.m. on Saturday at the church.
