Harold Allen Reed died Saturday night at home following an extended illness. He was 85. Born December 29, 1936 in Albany, he attended school in DeSoto, graduated from Albany High School in 1954, and was a graduate of International Barber School, Indianapolis. He was the owner/operator of Reeds Barber Shop (later known as Harold’s of Albany) and cut hair for over 50 years before retiring in 1999. Following retirement, he continued to cut hair from home. Harold was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Albany United Methodist Church as well as the Albany Lions Club. In earlier years he belonged to Independent Order of Oddfellows of Albany/Central Indiana, Old Car Club, Crown City Squares, and Muncie Moose. Harold was a former Albany Town Board member where he served as Police Commissioner. He enjoyed riding his scooter, woodworking & leathercraft, gardening, old cars, model trains, and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Barbara Reed; daughters: Jeaneen Adams (husband: Jay), Greenville, OH, and Brenda Cross (husband: David “Pete”), Albany; sisters: Ruth Campbell, Pfafftown, NC, and Helen Gray, Dunkirk; brother-in-law: Jim Wade, MO; grandchildren: Amanda Wesley (husband: Cody), Jessica Freeman (husband: Ryan), Dustin Cross (wife: Haley), Jason Adams (wife: Brianna), and Kayla Anderson (husband: Brody); 12 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special family friend: John Blankenship, Dunkirk.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Hayes H. & Virginette E. (Gollifer) Reed and a brother: Russell Reed.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Albany United Methodist Church. Visiting hours are Sunday from 1 until 3 p.m. at the church.
