Fred James Edwards

Fred James Edwards, age 84, DeSoto, passed away at 7:45 AM on Monday, May 29, 2023 at Morrison Woods Health Campus. Fred was surrounded by his loving wife and three daughters, whom he cherished dearly.

Born in Muncie on September 27, 1938, Fred was the son of Moyne and Clara Edwards, both of whom preceded him in passing. Fred married the love of his life, Nellie Irene Vincent, on September 17, 1960.

Fred went to work at a very young age and became a master carpenter. He worked for Herschel Austin for many years and then took over the company in the 1980’s. He owned and operated F. James Edwards Construction Company until a few years before his passing.  He was a member of the Central Indiana Insurance Adjusters Association and was well known with all the local insurance agencies.  Fred’s work spoke for itself, and he was highly commended and recommended by the residents he worked for.

Fred truly enjoyed the lake life.  He built his family a home on Tippecanoe Lake with his own hands, along with the help of his family. Watching his family have fun was the true highlight of his life. He also enjoyed fishing, bird watching and the occasional trip to the casino.

In addition to his wife, Nellie “Irene” Edwards, of DeSoto, those who survive include three daughters: Freda Callahan, Warsaw, Lori (Kevin) Kimmerling, Albany, and Debbie Edwards, DeSoto; grandchildren: Josh (Shannon Bex) Downing, Franklin, Craig (Kristina) Downing, Dunkirk, Travis Daugherty, Warsaw, Jessica Daugherty, Connersville, Kayla (Hal Jones) Strahan, DeSoto, Cody Strahan, Muncie, Nathan Weist, DeSoto, Josh (Katelyn) Kimmerling, New Carlisle, Drew (Grace) Kimmerling, Muncie, and 18 great-grandchildren; brother: Frank Edwards, Muncie, sisters: Beverly “Joanne” Leeka and Lenore Lutton, Muncie.

Family and friends may gather to pay respects and share in remembrance at Meacham Funeral Service on Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 1 until 3 PM. Funeral services will begin at the conclusion of calling with Pastor Damon Soper officiating. Private burial will be held at a later date.
