Darrell Wayne Hensley, age 87, Albany, died Thursday July 6, 2023 at home following an extended illness. Born in Delaware County on August 8, 1935, he grew up near Yorktown and graduated from Green Township High School with the class of 1953. Darrell was a truck driver and service tech for Central Indiana Gas Co. for 18 years, retiring in 1975. He then owned & operated Hi-Way Motor Sales in Albany for 20 years and continued his salesmanship at Terry Tarr Chevrolet and Bill Walker GM Center, both in New Castle. Darrell attended Albany United Methodist Church and owned lake property at Brookville (IN) Lake Resort from 1984 until 2001. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, boating, and collecting classic cars. For their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries, Darrell and Betty celebrated with a family cruise – each one with over 30 family members participating. In years past, Darrell was a member of Muncie Moose Lodge and Muncie Boat Club.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 69 years, Betty R. Hensley; daughters: Pamela J. Pulley (husband: Christopher) and Debra Lehman (husband: Robert, Jr.); sons: William D. Hensley (wife: Nori) and Richard E. Hensley (wife: Mary); 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.
He is preceded in death by parents: Chester A. & Mattie M. (Hodson) Hensley; brothers: Harold "Buddy" Hensley, Leonard Hensley, and John Hensley; sisters: Doris Maxine Shell, L. Kathleen Lawrence, and Clarise Mae Kellum.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2023 at Albany United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Muncie.
Visiting hours are Sunday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to the service on Monday.
