ALBANY – Walter M. Smith, age 62, Albany, died Monday evening at Ball Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Pettus, WV, he was the son of Golden & Mary Ann Smith. He worked at Indiana Glass, Dunkirk, and Yellow Cab Co., Muncie; he went on to work for the railroad until retiring due to illness in 2006. He enjoyed trains and attended Dunkirk Church of the Nazarene when he was able.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Kathy Smith; a son: Walter Ray Seth Smith, Hartford City; 3 step-sons: Rick L. Scoles (wife: Pam), Goshen, Golden Stouder (wife: Cara), Celina, OH, and Robert Stouder (wife: Kendra), Dunkirk; a daughter: Ashley L. Parker (husband: Dean), Hartford City; 3 step-daughters: Jill Wright (husband: Kevin), Topeka, IN, Sylvia Perkins (husband: Jerome), Sparta, TN, and Amanda Nichols (husband: Travis), Portland; 3 brothers: Clifford Smith, Albany, Alfred Smith (wife: Susie), Sylvester, WV, and Robert Smith, Charleston, WV; a sister: Shirley Ladd (husband: Charles), Dunkirk; 3 grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews. The family would like to express a special thank you to Brenda Rose Reed.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Archie Lee Massey.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 1, 2011, at Dunkirk Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Tom Fett officiating. Visiting hours will be held from 11-1 p.m. on Friday at the church.
