Verna Jean Coons, age 87, Albany, died unexpectedly on Thursday January 24, 2019, at home.  Born in Albany on May 21, 1931, she graduated from Albany High School in 1949 and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1952.  She taught nursing at Methodist Hospital, eventually becoming Assistant Director of Nursing and retired in 1993 as Director of Nursing of Methodist & Ivy Tech Schools of Nursing.  She was a member of Albany Christian Church and Professional Business Women's Association.  She enjoyed working puzzles, reading, traveling, watching football & basketball, and going to the casino.

Survivors include three nieces: Karen Koontz (husband: Steve), Sharen Unroe (husband: Dennis), Carol Fager (husband: Kenny), and a nephew: Norman Arens.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Orval & Garnette (Daniels) Coons, two brothers: Norman Coons, Orval Royce Coons, and two sisters: Kathryn Wright and Irma Arens.

Services will be 12 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2019, at Meacham Funeral Service.  Burial will follow at Strong Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 10-12 p.m. at the funeral home.
