Ruby Johnson, age 70, former longtime resident of Dunkirk, died Sunday April 5, 2026 at Swiss Village in Berne. Born in Portland on June 6, 1955, she graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1974 and received certification from business school. Ruby was a radio dispatcher at the Dunkirk Police Department for several years before retiring in 1994. After retirement, she worked for the Jay County Sheriff’s Office as a 911 operator until 2010. She was a member of Moose Lodge 1352, Dunkirk, and American Legion Post 227 Auxiliary, Dunkirk.

Survivors include her granddaughters: Alexandria Johnson (Derick Franks), Geneva, Lacie Starr (Matthew Kiser), Geneva, and Jenna Carroll (husband: Dwight), Decatur, as well as 10 great-grandchildren.

Ruby was preceded in death by her daughter, Christina Johnson; parents: James & Virginia (Hardaman) Johnson, and 3 brothers: Rick Johnson, George Johnson, and Jerry W. Johnson.

Visitation will be Wednesday April 8, 2026 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Meacham Funeral Service followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Dunkirk I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation in memory of Ruby.
