Ronald Joseph (Ronny Joe) Schmidt, age 79, Albany, passed away at home on Monday October 14, 2024, following a battle with AML Leukemia. Ron was born on August 15, 1945, to the late Frank J. and Mary E. (Carpenter) Schmidt in Indianapolis. He was a 1963 graduate of Scecina Memorial High School; following graduation, Ron enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving honorably for 4 years. After returning home, he was employed with Indiana Bell Telephone for 5 years.
In February of 1973, Ron was appointed to the Indianapolis Police Department where he served for 28 years, retiring in 2001 as a patrol officer, K9 handler, and narcotics detective. During his police service, Ron received numerous awards for work on County and Federal Task Forces.
After retirement, Ron worked as a Grand Jury Investigator for the Marion County Prosecutor assigned to the Metropolitan Drug Task Force, retiring again in 2011.
Ron and his late wife, Vee Ann, moved to Myrtle Beach where Ron enjoyed golf and the beach. In 2021, Ron & Vee Ann relocated to Albany to be closer to family.
Ron was a member of FOP Lodge 86, American Legion Post 167, Retired Police Officers Association, Albany Golf Club, Union Literary Institute Preservation Society, Muncie A.R.F. volunteer, and the Albany Lions Club.
Ron is preceded in death by his wife, Vee Ann Schmidt; parents; brothers: Kenneth and Robert.
Survivors include sisters: Donna Ping, Georgia, and Norma Reardon, Florida; daughter: Debra Orange-Miller and grandson: Aleksandr (Aleks) Orange-Miller, Indianapolis; son: Michael Schmidt, Raleigh, NC; step-daughter: Mary Carter and step-granddaughter: Madalyn Milner, Albany.
No public service or visitation is planned.
