ALBANY – Maxine Surface, age 93, of Albany, died Friday morning at Albany Health Care & Rehabilitation Center.  Born in Tuscola, IL on Sept. 11, 1920, she was the daughter of Sherman Shields & Catherine Stewart.  She had been a resident of the Albany area since 1940.  Maxine worked alongside her husband, Joe, on their Delaware County farm for several years and enjoyed quilting.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Gates, Dunkirk; two grandchildren: Gary Gates (wife: Lysa), Albany, and Melissa Mumbower (husband: Dane), Dunkirk; three great-grandchildren: Matthew Munson (wife: Jama), Muncie, Kodi Mumbower, Dunkirk, and Paige Mumbower, Dunkirk; also, one great-great-grandson: Allen Munson, Muncie.

Her husband of 68 years, Joseph Surface, died in 2007; her parents are also deceased.

Services will be conducted at 1p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Meacham Funeral Service, Albany, with burial following at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 12 until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
