Obituary

ALBANY - On Friday, October 25, 2024, John D. Clevenger passed away in the mountains of Austria while visiting family.  He was 60 years of age.  Born on December 16, 1963 in Augsburg, Germany, John was fostered by the Leikam family until his adoption at the age of seven by the Clevenger family. He attended DelCom schools and graduated from Delta High School in 1983. He then graduated from Ball State in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science.

John managed Heilig-Meyers furniture stores for over ten years, and worked as a paramedic for Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services, retiring in 2023 after 16 years of service. On December 3, 1997, he married Jody Bingman, his wife of 27 years. John was a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, a 30+ year Master Mason with Anthony Lodge No. 171, and a member of the Scottish Rite along with his father and brothers.

John was a devoted husband, father, and son; he was loved by many throughout his community, and was known for his generosity, intelligence, good humor, and open heart.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold Clevenger Sr., and his grandparents, Benny & Ruth Thurman, and John & Lucille Clevenger.

He is survived by his wife, Jody Clevenger; his sons August (Bob, Brad) and Cameron Clevenger; his mother, Shirley Clevenger; his foster parents Gertie & Helmut Leikam; his siblings Arnold Clevenger Jr. (Leisha), Patricia Sharp (Steve), and Nicholas Clevenger; his overseas siblings Gerhard Leikam (Karin) and Barbara Valek (Kurt); his mother-in-law, Karen Bingman; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, and countless friends.

A Celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, November 2nd at Albany Christian Church, with visiting hours from 11am until 1pm and the ceremony at 1pm.  Masonic rites will be given by Anthony Lodge No. 171, F. & A.M.

Memorials may be sent to Every Child Indiana, in support of children in foster care.
