Jerry A. Cowgill, Sr., age 88, Albany, died Friday October 11, 2024 at home following an illness. Born in Jay County on May 1, 1936, he grew up there and attended Governor I.P. Gray School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean War. Jerry was a truck driver for 42 years and drove for companies including McCormick Bros., Abany, and Indiana Glass Co., Dunkirk, where he worked until the factory closed in 2002. He also worked in the kitchen at Signature Health Care, Muncie, until retiring in 2020.
He was a member of American Legion Post 227, Dunkirk, and was a former Teamster and member of the Flint Glassworkers Union. Jerry also served on the Albany Police Department. He enjoyed going to flea markets and rummage sales.
Survivors include a son: Jerry Cowgill, Albany; daughters: Donna Cowgill (partner: John Reynolds), Portland, Brenda Clossen (husband: August), Belleville, IL, and Deborah "Debbie" Myers (husband: Steven), Portland; 4 grandchildren: Lana, Tabitha, Dustin, and Jeremy; 6 great-grandchildren; nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Martha "Kitty" Cowgill, who died in 2020; great-granddaughter: Aubrey Jane Hammond; parents: Parker Cowgill and Mary (Maynard) Starr, brothers: Charles Cowgill, Robert Cowgill, and Phillip Cowgill, and sister: Mary Esther.
The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Meacham Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Salamonia Cemetery where military rites will be bestowed.
Visiting hours are Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
