ALBANY – Harland E. Jeffers, age 88, Albany, died Wednesday June 4, 2014, at home following an illness. Born in Vigo County on Feb. 15, 1926, his family moved to the DeSoto area when he was young. He graduated from DeSoto High School in 1944 and three days later was drafted into the military. Harland served a term of service in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged. He lived in Florida for 53 years; during that time he worked for Tip Top Bakeries as a bread delivery driver until retirement. He also worked for several years in auction houses in Florida and Indiana. Harland moved to Albany in 2005 and was a member of Albany Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Mary J. (Cougill) Jeffers; a son: Duane Jeffers, FL; 2 daughters: Connie Jean Swartwood, FL, and Janelle McKenna (husband: Michael), FL; a step-son: Michael Dalton (wife: Valerie), Muncie; 2 step-daughters: Debbie Alexander (husband: Roger), Albany, and Pam Clevenger (husband: Jerry), DeSoto; a brother: Wayman Jeffers, GA; 2 grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren, 18 step great-grandchildren, 2 nieces, and 5 nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles A. & Daisey M. Jeffers, and 2 brothers: Richard Jeffers and Bob Jeffers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Meacham Funeral Service, Albany, with burial following at Union Cemetery, DeSoto.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the funeral home.
