Gene McCombs, age 88, Dunkirk, died Tuesday August 29, 2017 at home with family by his side.  Born in Dunkirk on Sept. 14, 1928, he attended Dunkirk High School and was a lifelong resident of the city.  Gene worked for the Jay School Corporation in Dunkirk for thirty-one years before retiring and had also worked at Ludwig's Grocery for seventeen years.  He was a veteran of the Indiana National Guard and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.  Gene was a member of American Legion Post 227, Dunkirk, and enjoyed playing cards, fishing, hunting, and camping.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, Sarah Alvina McCombs, and their children: Nona Bonifas (husband: Greg), Dunkirk, Sarah Daniels, Dunkirk, Scott McCombs (wife: Tina), Dunkirk, Robin Jeffers (husband: Chris), Dunkirk, and Shannon McCombs, Dunkirk; 11 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Luther J. & Lillian M. (Wilson) McCombs; a grandson: Skyler McCombs; a son-in-law: Phillip E. "Phil" Daniels, and two sisters: Waneeta Walser and Rosalie Duffey.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Meacham Funeral Service.  Burial will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dunkirk with military graveside rites.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 12 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
