MUNCIE – Donald Robert Riggin, age 82, Muncie, died Tuesday July 30, 2013, at home following an extended illness. Born in Muncie on May 29, 1931, he was the son of Robert & Mary Amelia Riggin. He was a 1949 graduate of Royerton High School. From a young age he worked at his family's dairy, Rea Riggin & Sons Inc, and retired when the business closed. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Atlantic Fleet during the Korean War – a time in which he participated in a Blue Nose ceremony for crossing the Arctic Circle. He was a member of Eden United Church of Christ, Delaware Lodge No. 46, F. & A.M., and Whitney Chapter #564 Order of The Eastern Star in New Burlington (now Daleville Chapter #568). In earlier years he was instrumental in the formation of the Civil Defense unit in Muncie and at one time was an amateur radio operator under the call sign of WA9IRT. He also enjoyed his family, gardening, and model airplanes.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Margaret H. Riggin; 2 sons: Jay Riggin (friend: Dawn), Muncie, and Jeff Riggin (wife: Karla), Albany; a brother: Dick Riggin, Muncie; 4 grandchildren: Rhaea Hayden (husband: Colton), Tanna Riggin, Amber Riggin, and Eli Riggin; 3 great-grandchildren: Jalen, Eryn, and Silas; also, several nieces & nephews.
His parents are deceased.
Private graveside services were held at the convenience of the Riggin family.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Robyn's Nest (the former Roetkin Apple Orchard), 1701 S. Perdieu Rd., Muncie, IN 47302.
