ALBANY – Charles G. Pittenger, longtime DeSoto resident, died Tuesday morning at Muncie Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was 85 years of age. Born in DeSoto on June 28, 1924, he was the son of Ira & Zoa (McKinley) Pittenger. He graduated from DeSoto High School in 1942 and shortly thereafter joined the United States Army during World War II. He served in the 112th Infantry Regiment and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He farmed for most of his life in Delaware County and was employed with Beckett Bronze in Muncie for several years before retiring. He was a 60+ year member of DeSoto United Methodist Church and was an avid I.U. basketball fan.
Survivors include his daughters: Vicki L. Reade (husband: Rex), Albany, and Susie Adams, Albany; a sister: Martha Canter, New Boston, MI; 2 sisters-in-law: Mabel Bush, Lakeland, FL, and Helen Miller, New Castle. Also surviving are several nieces & nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Nila M. Pittenger, his parents, and a brother who died in infancy.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010, at DeSoto United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, DeSoto, with military services provided by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Meacham Funeral Service, Albany, and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
