DUNKIRK – Tom Childers, 66, Dunkirk, passed away Friday October 6, 2017 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.  Born October 21, 1950 in Logan County, West Virginia, he was the son of Charles & Susie Childers.  He graduated from Logan High School in 1968 and moved to Indiana in 1970.  Tom worked at Indiana Glass Co. for thirty-four years with twenty-four years as a hot end Supervisor.  In 2004 he began work for Strategic Materials in Dunkirk where he was currently employed.

Tom was an avid sports fan and was loyal to his many favorite teams: Cincinnati Reds, Indianapolis Colts, IU basketball, and West Virginia football & basketball.  He also followed his high school football & basketball teams, the Logan Wildcats.  In earlier years he enjoyed coaching girls softball and pee-wee football when his daughter and nephews were young.

Tom was loved by family & friends and leaves many survivors including his wife of thirty-six years, Anita; two daughters: Ashley Childers, Dunkirk, and Tuwanna (Billy) Stevens, Elm City, NC; three grandchildren: Logan Robinette, Winchester, Daniel Draper, Elm City, NC, Heidi Oneal, Sebastian, FL, and two great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by a brother: Charles (Reva) Childers, Tulsa, OK; mother-in-law: Betty Peterson, Portland; two brothers-in-law: Alan (Becky) Peterson, Dunkirk, and Stanley (Sheila) Peterson, Cedar Bend, TN; sister-in-law: Frances Childers, Woodbridge, TN; family friends: Nicole Arwood, Dunkirk, and Judy Hummer, Elm City, NC; special nephews: Tommy, Joe, Bryan, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Tom also leaves his “family” at Strategic Materials whose support through his illness meant so much.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Forrest and Larry Childers; a sister: Geneva Blackburn; step-son: Doug Robinette; father-in-law: Paul Peterson, and sister-in-law: Jill Childers.

Anita would like to thank the Ball Hospital oncology RNs and Techs for their care and support of both Tom and herself during his stay.

No public services are planned at this time.  Cremation was chosen.
