August 30, 1930 ~ March 28, 2017 (age 86) 86 Years Old

DUNKIRK – Helen L. Springer, age 86, Dunkirk, died Tuesday afternoon at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.  Born in Hindsboro, IL on Aug. 30, 1930, she was a graduate of Charleston High School and Indiana Business College.  She grew up in Charleston, IL, moved to Albany in 1952, and lived briefly in Florida before moving back to Dunkirk in 1987.  Helen taught kindergarten in Dunkirk for three years in the early 1960’s then worked a total of eighteen years in Muncie for First Merchants Bank and Central Bank & Trust (Star Financial).  While living in Florida she was manager of Centre Care Medical Systems and upon returning to Indiana worked at the West Jay Clinic in Dunkirk until retiring.  She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Dunkirk, where she was active in the Alter Rosary Society.  Other memberships included Dunkirk Elks Lodge and Tri Kappa sorority (for over fifty years).  She volunteered at Jay County Hospital, was on the Dunkirk Beautification Committee, and enjoyed playing cards, having belonged to several area bridge clubs.

Survivors include her special friend: Bill Nelson, FL; a son: Jimmy Springer (significant other: Anne Robertson), Dunkirk; two daughters: Brenda Whitesell (husband: Mike), Dunkirk, and Martha Spade (husband: Larry), Dunkirk; a sister: Joy Frazier, Mankato, MN; nine grandchildren: Jana Fisher, Dana Kwarteng (husband: Ken), Brandi Champ (husband: Wes), Julie Braun (husband: Jason), Melissa Maxwell (husband: Adam), Sandi Fuller (husband: Jon), Bobby Springer (wife: Brittany), Shannon Springer, and Joey Springer; eleven great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her husband: Charles H. Springer; her parents: Forest & Helen Dailey; five brothers: Harold, Jack, Frank, Earl, and Clifford Dailey; also, two sisters: Catherine Beam and Margaret O’Dell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dunkirk.  Entombment will follow at Elm Ridge Cemetery, Muncie.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. at Meacham Funeral Service, Albany, with a prayer service commencing at 3:30 p.m.

Memorials may be sent to St. Mary Catholic Church, Dunkirk, The Salvation Army, or A.L.S. Association of Indiana.
